Fish For the Heart
Low cholesterol values in seafood allow us to eat to our “heart’s content”, so says a bulletin from the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries. They go on to say that 60 to 80 percent of the fat, especially in cold water species of fish, such as Herring, Atlantic Mackerel, etc. is polyunsaturated (which is believed to decrease blood cholesterol). Numerous publications, originating with fisheries research and medical research organizations, attest to the healthful benefits of eating these species of fish.
Certain polyunsaturated fats in seafood, called Omega 3 fatty acids, have been found to lower blood cholesterol by helping to prevent life-threatening blood clotts; this means a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke. Medical studies released in Scotland gave high marks to Atlantic Herring and Mackerel as excellent sources of Omega 3 fatty acids and confirmed its beneficial effects.
Research is ongoing concerning the benefits of eating fish. Important findings suggest a positive effect of the Omega 3 factor in reducing the inflammation of arthritis and even in preventing breast cancer. A recent study by researchers at UCLA (1998) linked higher levels of Omega 3 consumption with lower levels of breast cancer. The studies and promising research continue, all pointing to better health through eating fish, especially Herring and Mackerel.
