About Handy
Handy is America’s oldest seafood processor and has consistently maintained the highest quality standards in the seafood industry for over 100 years. Handy opened a plant in Crisfield on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay in 1903 and began specializing in the processing of the area’s best-known delicacy: soft shell crabs. Though the Handy plant has a new location and has expanded over the years, it is still located in Crisfield, Maryland and we continue to be a family-owned company with a focus on quality and transparency.

Our product line has grown to include handmade crab cakes and seafood cakes, shrimp products, crab meat, oysters and fish. With each new product we introduce, we continue our focus on quality, great flavor and the use of all-natural ingredients. Our crab recipes feature only fresh crab meat and you will not find long lists of complicated ingredients on our packages. We are proud to have introduced the world’s first and only certified gluten-free crab cakes.

We marry expertise with innovation. Over the years, Handy has invented new processing techniques for soft shell crabs, patented packaging, and developed new recipes.

In order to conserve resources in the U.S. and to respond to the growing demand for healthy seafood products, we expanded our sourcing and processing to Asia and Central America where fresh seafood is available year round. We manage our plants abroad with the same care and attention to detail that we use at home and maintain close control of every aspect from sourcing to production.

In addition to quality, our customers’ safety has always been of primary importance. We have voluntarily sought out independent inspections of our plants. We became a part of the FDA’s Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points program (HACCP) before it became mandatory and are annually inspected by Silliker, a recognized independent auditing firm, that has given us a “gold” rating–a ranking attained by less than 10% of the plants it inspects.

From that first small plant in Crisfield to our current global presence in production and sales of our high quality seafood products, our family-owned company plans to continue with innovation and the development of new seafood items.
