HISTORY
In 1912, Basilio Castro Ballesteros founded a family-run company that soon reached great popularity among the Oviedo population with its offer of excellent quality fresh fish right from the very start. “The company has been growing due to the profesionality of the Castro family to the point of becoming one of the main companies in the food industry”

Thanks to the professionalism of the Castro family, the company grew to become one of the main companies in the food sector, forcing it to expand its facilities and create a cold storage plan in the sixties in the town of Lugones, from where it could centralise its commercial operations. After almost a century since the company was created, experience has shown José Castro Alonso, its successor and true heir of the good work of his father, to work with enthusiasm and determination to place the company in an honourable position in the domestic food sector. A result of this continued, innovative work was the creation of the Friobás Basilio Group, equipped with the most modern technology and a large team of professionals who ensure a perfect structure to look after the entire process of purchasing, preservation and processing for the widest range of frozen products. In 2002, Friobás inaugurated its new frozen foods factory. This great investment involved the construction of one of the most modern facilities in the sector in Spain. It has 16,000 m3 of cold storage to store over five million kilograms of frozen food and a 1000 m3 processing

This project led the company to new markets and domestic and international expansion. This expansion has already begun to show results with the forthcoming inauguration in 2007/08 of a Canning Factory on the Olloniego Industrial Estate and the opening of a sales area on the Espíritu Santo Industrial Estate in 2006, made up of offices and an exhibition unit covering 4,347 m2.

WORK TEAM
The group of companies has a workforce of almost 200 people, spread around the delegations of Asturias, León and Palencia. It is worth noting that 70% of the workforce are women.

As we are aware that our staff is our real asset we are certified since 2006 with the International Standard OHSAS 18001:1999 that stands for Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series. This assures not only our compliance with current legislation but also with the highest standards related with risk prevention in the workplace and the protection of worker’s health.

AWARDS
Empresario Siglo XXI Award (2002) presented by El Centro Asturiano de Oviedo and sponsored by La Federación Asturiana de Empresarios (FADE) and the Oviedo Chamber of Commerce. Plomada de Plata Award (2004) 9th year for its Industrial Building, presented by La Asociación de Promotores y Constructores de Edificios (ASPROCON).

WHEN QUALITY GIVES PRESTIGE
Our products go through a thorough selection control. They are carefully frozen and processed in the company itself, which has a new processing room for this purpose with three freezing tunnels and a production turnover of over 400 tons a month. In this room, which has been official approved by the European Community, all of the products are carefully looked after to reach the consumer in perfect condition. The ISO 22000:2005 Quality Certificate adds to the prestige of our group, its products and it points of sale network, which currently has over 50 shops nationwide. The company also has 35 refrigerated vehicles, the main function of which involves the daily distribution of our “Friobás” products to restaurants, department stores, organisations and hotel chains.
